Health

Health and the Border Terrier.

Well, they say you cant keep a good dog down, and this is certainly the case for the Border Terrier, in general they are a robust, healthy breed with no major health concerns.   You will never get a breed that has no issues and problems will always arise, however I think its fair to say at present there are no diseases that Borders need to be tested for as a matter of course.

CECS.

The issues surrounding a newish disease “Canine Epileptoid cramping syndrome” or CECS is a controversial one.  This disease is NOT confined to Border Terriers, but it can affect some, and its Border breeders and enthusiasts who are taking the time and effort to gain information and possibly a genetic marker to help identify and hopefully cure the problem in the future.

It is manifested as “cramps” in the dogs abdomen, back, tail and legs and is often confused with Epilepsy but its important that if you suspect your dog may be suffering from either of these that you recognise the main difference and mention it to your Vet.  A dog with CECS will not lose consciousness, they remain alert and in obvious pain, they will try to respond, but are often unable to, a dog with Epilepsy is usually non responsive and will “paddle” and urinate whilst being flat on its side on the floor.

There is a long way to go in finding the cause, marker and cure for this problem and indeed how it is triggered, passed on or contracted, but there is much work being done to reach that point.

This is the “official” site and will give concerned owners the advice and information they require.
